Before you apply
...
At Jacksonville Sheltie Rescue, our primary concern is for the health and welfare of dogs that come through our program. Because of this, our adoption process is more than just us just handing over a sheltie to you. We are currently  processing  applications from
the Georgia and Florida area.
We receive dozens of applications a year, and usually have no more than a handful of dogs available at any time. This means that many applications are denied for one of
several reasons. Only the most dedicated pet owners rise to the top of the list.
Please be patient with our application process, there is only  one person to review applications on a daily basis. We are volunteers and have jobs and pets of our own  and also care for these rescued shelties by ourselves. Impatient people make impatient pet owners, which is a trait unsuitable for a rescued sheltie.
Below is a list of things that can get an adoption application denied:

If you do not keep your pet's vaccinations and preventatives current, you will not be      considered for adoption.

If you plan on using an "invisible" fence, you will not be considered for adoption. These types of fences are not safe, and shelties have a high tolerance for pain.

If you plan on keeping your dog as an "outside dog", you will not be considered for adoption.

If you are not ready to commit to a dog for the rest of its life, you will not be considered for adoption.

Our adoption fee is usually 200.00 for adult dogs. Puppies adoption fees are $300.00.

These adoption fees includes spay or neuter, routine shots, tatooing, or microchipping heartworm check and preventative, flea prevention, worming, and grooming.  The amount we spend preparing a dog for adoption is usually upwards of $200.00 Some are lower and others are significantly higher. Our fees are only negotiable in very special circumstances. We do not arrange payment plans. We accept cash or checks for adoption fees.

After you submit your application, we will contact your veterinarian to verify that your current pets are up to date on all  vaccinations and preventatives. If they are not, then your application will be automatically denied.

If your veterinarian confirms vaccinations and preventatives, we will contact you to discuss your expectations and to answer any questions you might have about the adoption process. After that, we may visit with you in your home. First  time applicants are
interviewed in their own homes to ensure that the adoptive families understand the
responsibilities of owning and caring for a sheltie and the needs of a second-hand dog.

Once this process is complete, we'll work to match you with a dog that is right for your family, or we'll place you on a waiting list. When a dog is chosen you will have to come to our home to meet the Sheltie in our living room. We intend for this to be a permanent placement and we and you have to know the dog and you are a connection. Then you will be required to complete an adoption contract at the time of adoption.

We reserve the right to refuse an applicant if, in  our judgment, the home situation is not compatible with the needs of a sheltie or if the breed is not suitable for the  applicant.
